The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and The Council on Ethanol for Clean Cooking (CECC), in collaboration with the Vice-President Office of Tanzania and the Climate Finance & Energy Innovation Hub, are hosting two key events at COP29 focused on advancing clean cooking solutions in Africa. These sessions will bring together global leaders, stakeholders, and experts to discuss financing, partnerships, and national strategies aimed at scaling clean cooking access across the continent.
Time: 15:45 – 16:45 (AZT)
The first session will explore the critical role of financing in scaling clean cooking technologies across Africa. Special attention will be given to Tanzania’s National Clean Cooking Energy Strategy, which aims to provide 80% of the population with access to clean cooking solutions by 2034. The session will also reflect on the African Women Clean Cooking Support Programme (AWCCSP) launched by H.E. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of Tanzania, at COP28 in 2023. This groundbreaking program focuses on empowering African women, who bear the brunt of the negative impacts of traditional cooking fuels. The event will also highlight the results of the Clean Cooking Summit in Paris (2024), where global partners committed over $2.2 billion to the cause, signaling a growing commitment to clean cooking investments.
Time: 17:00 – 18:00 (AZT)
The second event will focus on how partnerships can drive the scaling of clean cooking solutions. Despite notable progress, 2.1 billion people worldwide still lack access to clean cooking, with Sub-Saharan Africa remaining a key region of concern. To meet the clean cooking goals by 2030, it is estimated that $4 billion annually is needed. This session will explore innovative financing mechanisms and best practices in implementing national clean cooking strategies, providing countries with a platform to showcase their efforts and share lessons learned. Panel discussions will feature senior officials from Tanzania, Côte d’Ivoire, and Madagascar, as well as experts in clean cooking and energy finance. These events will provide essential insights on how international organizations, governments, and the private sector can collaborate to meet financing needs and scale clean cooking solutions. By highlighting national strategies, partnerships, and innovative funding models, the sessions aim to accelerate progress toward universal access to clean cooking by 2030, benefitting millions of people across Africa.
